Abstract
In his Histoire du XIXe siècle (1872–1874), Jules Michelet devoted the first chapters of his study to the Directory, stating, "Jacobinism ends. – Socialism begins." It is this passage, crucial for the French historian, that engages us here. More specifically, it is Michelet's intimate relationship with Gracchus Babeuf, who was guillotined in 1797 for his active participation in the Conspiracy of the Equals, that holds us here. Babeuf's passage through Michelet's life was a key aspect of his profound love of the people. It was also one of the deepest roots of his political and philosophical thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
