Abstract
An RAF serviceman dries his washing among anti-tank obstacles on the Siegfried Line on Germany’s western border. Released by the British Air Ministry, this photograph was a play on a ditty written by Jimmy Kennedy, a captain in the British Expeditionary Force, in 1939. The song ends with the line: “We’re gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line, if the Siegfried Line’s still there!” The picture was taken before much of the fighting across the Rhineland, including at Aachen, Hürtgen Forest and Remagen. These battles helped secure the Western Allies’advance into Germany.PHOTO (COLOR)PHOTO (COLOR) [Extracted from the article]
