Abstract

The article describes the approach of composer Kevin Smithers to creating the music score for the films "I Am Frankelda" and "Women Wearing Shoulder Pads." It discusses Smithers' development of the musical identity of "I Am Frankelda" by featuring theremin, organ, choir and full orchestra to evoke its supernatural tone and celebrate its Mexican heritage, as well as the incorporation of chamber string ensemble sound and Latin American heritage in the score for "Women Wearing Shoulder Pads."
