Abstract
The article focuses on the humanitarian crisis in Cuba caused by a January 29, 2026, U.S. Executive Order that prohibits countries from supplying oil to Cuba under threat of economic retaliation. Eight former Caribbean Community (CARICOM) heads of state issued a statement condemning this action as economic warfare that deepens Cuba's suffering amid longstanding U.S. embargoes. They call on CARICOM leaders to show solidarity with Cuba by opposing the blockade, emphasizing Cuba's historical support to the Caribbean through medical aid and other assistance. The article also highlights the severe impacts of the oil embargo on Cuban society, including healthcare, transportation, and food shortages, and references United Nations experts who classify the blockade as a violation of international human rights law.
