Abstract

This article reviews James McVinnie's recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Clavierübung III, a significant collection of liturgical organ works that combines both old and new stylistic elements, including references to the stile antico and the style galant. McVinnie, known for his dedication to contemporary music and leadership of the politically engaged James McVinnie Ensemble, performs on an 18th-century Arp Schnitger organ in Groningen, whose acoustics present challenges for clarity in dense polyphony. The review notes McVinnie's effective use of tempo and registration to provide contrast within the collection, though some full-organ passages can be aurally demanding. While the release is appreciated, it is not considered to surpass notable previous recordings by Lionel Rogg, Christopher Herrick, or Masaaki Suzuki. [Extracted from the article]
