Abstract

This article evaluates the impact of Uber Technologies, Inc.'s ride-hailing system on traffic injury (TI) mortality rates in Brazilian capital cities during the first 12 months after its implementation. Using a quasiexperimental interrupted time-series design and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models, the study found that in 25 of 27 capitals (92.6%), Uber's introduction had no significant effect on TI mortality. However, two capitals in the Southeast region—Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro—experienced a progressive and continuous reduction in TI mortality following Uber's implementation. The findings highlight regional disparities and suggest that socioeconomic, urban density, and public transportation factors may influence the heterogeneous effects of ride-hailing services on traffic safety in developing country contexts.
