Abstract
The article reviews *Industrial Craft in Australia: Oral Histories of Creativity and Survival* (2021), which examines the role of industrial craftspeople—particularly engineering patternmakers—in Australia’s manufacturing sector through historical and contemporary oral histories. It highlights the decline of traditional trades amid deindustrialization and technological shifts, while emphasizing the potential for a hybrid approach combining traditional skills with digital fabrication to sustain local manufacturing. The book also addresses socio-economic factors such as class and gender, explores the application of craft skills in artistic practice, and argues for the importance of retaining industrial craft knowledge to support sustainable, localized manufacturing futures in Australia.
