Abstract

This article discusses the historical hypotheses and theories that have shaped current research in evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo). It highlights the contributions of scientists such as Karl von Baer, Charles Darwin, and Ernst Haeckel, who proposed that embryonic development recapitulates phylogeny. The article also explores the role of genome evolution in the origin of novel body plans, the origin of the nervous system, the diversification of larvae and bilaterian life cycles, and the significance of lophophorates in understanding metazoan traits.
