Abstract
But when you consider the size of cassette decks compared with the cassette itself, it's the Sony Walkman that took the cassette to its ultimate conclusion. As for Grundig, it lost out in the middle of the Sony-Philips battle - by 1966, Japanese manufacturers were churning out cassettes and recorders by the bushel and the following year, the recently-renamed "Compact Cassette" had won. For Philips, this must have come as a shock - either it now caved in to Sony and forgot the royalties, or, it stuck to its guns and fought a united Sony-Grundig front for the cassette market. Sony must have sensed the tide was turning in its favour, for it now demanded Philips either drop its royalties completely, or Sony would choose Grundig. [Extracted from the article]
