Abstract

The article reflects on archival research into poet Enoch Powell's 1968 "Rivers of Blood" speech to examine how historical documents, language and memory continue to shape contemporary political feeling and bodily response. Topics include the emotional and ethical impact of confronting racist archives, the archive as a metaphorical and destabilizing force and questions of citizenship, art and resistance to inherited violence.
