Abstract

Even though copper may now be chosen to treat certain skin lesions, this element was not used in 18th century pharmacopoeia; the copper contained in the sampled deposit may simply come from contamination from the bathtub metal. Which treatment for the French revolutionist Jean-Paul Marat's dermatitis (1793)? In order to determine the elemental composition of the pharmaceutical preparations used by Marat to treat his skin disease, we sampled and analysed deposits of mineral materials inside the bathtub (Figure 1c) (see Supplementary Appendix S1 in the Supporting Information).
