Abstract
This article examines the programming approaches and historical development of computer chess, highlighting its significance in artificial intelligence (AI) and software engineering. It explains that chess engines primarily rely on the MiniMax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning and heuristics to manage the vast game space, supported by static evaluation functions and opening move libraries. The article traces milestones from early automata like El Ajedrecista to modern engines such as Stockfish and AlphaZero, noting their contributions to AI techniques and complex software design. It also discusses ongoing challenges in computer chess, including achieving unbeatable or perfectly optimal play, and explores the broader implications for AI research and human cognition.
