Abstract

The article focuses on the concept of "benevolent marginalization," a phenomenon where well-intentioned managerial actions aimed at supporting marginalized groups inadvertently reinforce power imbalances and hinder self-advocacy. Drawing on extensive research, it highlights examples such as benevolent sexism and ableism, where protective behaviors limit opportunities and perpetuate inequality. To dismantle this dynamic, the authors propose three key strategies for managers: shifting from help to empowerment, leveraging allies in non-managerial roles chosen by marginalized individuals, and creating supportive spaces that allow disadvantaged groups to lead and shape their own professional experiences. These approaches aim to foster genuine inclusion by addressing subtle discrimination and promoting autonomy within organizations.
