Abstract

The article focuses on recent advancements and investments in photonics and optical technologies. Imec’s venture capital fund, imec.xpand, launched a €300 million ($323 million) fund to support startups innovating in semiconductors, nanotechnology, AI, AR/VR, photonics, and life sciences, with portfolio companies including Celestial AI, PsiQuantum, and Swave Photonics. Researchers at the University of Rochester used adaptive optics to identify rare non-cardinal retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in the eye’s fovea, potentially advancing understanding of human color perception and informing future vision treatments. Additionally, Infinera demonstrated a simulated network capacity of 83.6 Tbps on Telstra InfraCo’s intercity fiber using its ICE7 and Super C+ L technologies, highlighting significant improvements in fiber network performance for telecommunications infrastructure.
