Abstract
This article focuses on the 1948 Broadway musical *Love Life: A Vaudeville in Two Parts*, composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, recently recorded by Opera North in 2025. The show uses a vaudeville format to explore American social history from Colonial times to 1948 through the marriage of Susan and Samuel Cooper, who remain ageless while their relationship evolves amid societal pressures. Recognized as the first concept musical, *Love Life* influenced later works by Stephen Sondheim and others, though it had a relatively short original run and was largely forgotten until this new recording. The Opera North production features a youthful cast and faithful orchestration by Weill, presenting a diverse musical style and sharp social commentary. Additional scenes cut from the original are included in the recording, and a separate New York production by the Encores! series is also noted. [Extracted from the article]
