Abstract

Hadrian's Wall was built by the Roman Empire in 122 CE to separate their conquered land in Britain from the barbarians in Caledonia. The wall spanned 73 miles and included 80 forts called milecastles, 17 larger forts called cohort castles, and two lookout turrets per milecastle. The wall remained an active military base for 300 years before being abandoned. The construction of the wall included defensive engineering features such as ditches, mounds, and a raised road. Some parts of the wall still stand today. [Extracted from the article]
