Abstract

Neil Murphy's book, "Henry VIII, the Duke of Albany and the Anglo-Scottish War of 1522–1524," provides a comprehensive analysis of the often overlooked Anglo-Scottish War. The book reconstructs the conflict from various angles, drawing on a wide range of sources such as central administration records, chronicles, urban archives, and correspondence with France and English intelligence reports. The findings are placed in the context of war in medieval and early modern Europe, highlighting the typical nature of this war of raids and truces. The book also examines aspects such as recruitment, defensive planning, supply, espionage, and devastation. While there are some minor flaws, the book is praised for shedding light on a neglected war and offering a rich and clear study. [Extracted from the article]
