Abstract
This article reviews a new historical analysis of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, focusing on the decisions and engagements during the 1944 conflict between the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. The author challenges long-standing criticisms of Admiral William F. Halsey's northward pursuit of a Japanese decoy force, arguing that Halsey's actions were justified based on the information available at the time. The work also highlights the valor of Admiral Clifton A.F. Sprague and his escort carriers during the Battle off Samar, as well as reassesses Admiral Takeo Kurita's decision to withdraw. Additionally, the book covers other key actions within the battle, including submarine operations and the Surigao Strait engagement led by Admiral Jesse Oldendorf.
