Abstract

"The Jewish Decadence: Jews and the Aesthetics of Modernity" by Jonathan Freedman explores the depiction of Jews in turn-of-the-century and twentieth-century literature and art. The book examines how Jews came to represent decadence, degeneration, and decay, as well as the Jewish responses to these representations. Freedman also discusses the influence of Jewish culture on the aesthetics of modernity, including the popularity of Oscar Wilde's play "Salome" and the visual representations of Jews in various artworks. The book offers a wide-ranging exploration of the complex relationship between Jews and the decadent imagination. [Extracted from the article]
