Abstract
The article focuses on the distinctive "Altgeld's Castles," a series of Richardsonian Romanesque-style buildings at Illinois public universities, initiated by John Peter Altgeld, Governor of Illinois from 1893 to 1897, who sought to replace utilitarian public buildings with castle-like architecture inspired by his German heritage. Among these, Altgeld Hall at the University of Illinois is noted for its medieval appearance and historic designation. The article also explores a campus legend about a hidden Dairy Queen in the basement of Altgeld Hall, fueled by online posts and student lore, which remains unconfirmed but symbolizes a nostalgic and communal search for comfort within the university's historic setting.
