Abstract

During World War II, Greece initially opted for armed neutrality under Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas to protect its population and territory. However, after Italy's "unjust attack" in October 1940, Greece sided with Britain. Despite British support, the German blitzkrieg offensive in 1941 led to the occupation of Greece by the Axis powers. The occupation brought terror, economic turmoil, and poverty to Greece, but resistance groups such as the communist-backed National Liberation Front (EAM) and the right-wing National Republican Greek League (EDES) emerged to protect Greece's sovereignty. The resistance used guerrilla warfare tactics and targeted key infrastructure to disrupt Axis operations. With British support, the resistance eventually forced the withdrawal of the Germans in October 1944. [Extracted from the article]
