Abstract

The article focuses on a study examining the beliefs of laypeople versus experts regarding animal consciousness and emotions, which are considered significant factors in determining moral status. The research involves a nationally representative sample of 444 U.S. participants and a group of 100 experts, including behavioral ecologists and evolutionary biologists. The study aims to assess whether the general public is more or less skeptical about animal sentience compared to experts, highlighting the implications of these beliefs on animal welfare laws and meat consumption.
