Abstract

This article focuses on piloting an enhanced version of the Trauma Resilience and Recovery Program (TRRP), a technology-facilitated intervention designed to monitor substance use and mental health recovery among traumatically injured adolescents and young adults aged 12–30 years at two urban Level 1 trauma centers. The adapted TRRP incorporated opioid and substance use education via a mobile app, daily text message symptom monitoring, periodic online behavioral health screenings, and clinician-facilitated referrals to care. Results showed moderate to high engagement with text-based monitoring and behavioral health screenings, identification of elevated depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, and substance use, and a high rate of follow-up among participants with positive screens. However, engagement with the app-based educational content was low, indicating a need for strategies to improve access and utilization. The study suggests that the enhanced TRRP model is feasible for identifying behavioral health concerns post-injury and highlights the importance of further research to assess its effectiveness in improving clinical outcomes and expanding its implementation settings.
