Abstract

Nippon Steel, the world's fourth largest steelmaker, has proposed a $15 billion buyout of U.S. Steel, a historic American manufacturing company. The buyout has been approved by U.S. Steel stockholders and E.U. regulators, but is opposed by the United Steelworkers union and both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. The situation is complicated by the fact that Japan is a key ally in U.S. efforts to counter China's rise. Nippon Steel has stated that it will protect jobs and make U.S. Steel more competitive.
