Abstract

The article examines how late medieval English texts explore human and divine authority in the context of the Last Judgment. Topics include the influence of church councils and conciliar debates on ideas of human judgment in religious writing; the coexistence of two Doomsday scenarios—one emphasizing God's absolute authority and the other endorsing human agency; and the analysis of Middle English sermons and writings.
