Abstract
The University of Glasgow conducted research on the online framing of intrauterine device (IUD) self-removal by contraceptive providers. The study found that online sources reinforced provider authority over contraception through biomedical constructions of risk and safety, dismissing users' experiential knowledge. The research concluded that power and knowledge hierarchies extend beyond clinical interactions to digital contexts, reflecting broader socio-structural controls over bodies and reproductive decision-making. This peer-reviewed study sheds light on the unequal power dynamics in online discussions of IUD self-removal. [Extracted from the article]
