Abstract

The article explores the mass murder of African American refugees by Confederate soldiers at the 1864 Battle of Marks' Mills in Arkansas during the American Civil War. Topics discussed include the diary entry of Lieutenant Benjamin Pearson of Iowa regarding the said wartime racial violence, the Camden Expedition led by Union Army officer Frederick Steele which resulted to the Battle, and the killing of African American refugees that defied the slave order of the Confederate Army.
