Abstract
The article focuses on the rise and legacy of the Capetian dynasty in medieval West Francia (later France), beginning with Hugh Capet’s accession to the throne in 987. Contrary to later chronicles that portrayed Hugh as a usurper who seized power through treachery, contemporary sources suggest he was chosen by nobles for his leadership qualities amid the extinction of the Carolingian line. Hugh’s coronation, supported by influential church figures like Archbishop Adalbero of Reims, established a new royal lineage that ruled France for over three centuries, transforming it into a powerful kingdom. Despite their achievements, the Capetians were long shadowed by rumors of illegitimacy and prophecies predicting their downfall, which they sought to counter through ritual, political alliances, and claims of Carolingian descent. The dynasty’s direct male line ended in 1328, leading to the Valois succession and the dynastic conflicts that sparked the Hundred Years War.
