Abstract
The article focuses on the establishment of the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument, created by President Joe Biden’s proclamation on August 16, 2024, to preserve 1.57 acres of federal land in Springfield, Illinois. The monument commemorates the 1908 Springfield Race Riot, a violent racial attack by a mob of about 5,000 white Americans and European immigrants against African Americans, which resulted in deaths, lynchings, and destruction of Black neighborhoods. The riot led to the formation of the NAACP in 1909. The designation aims to educate current and future generations about this history and its ongoing relevance to issues of racial justice and democracy.
