Abstract
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern over Chinese influence near the Panama Canal, stating that it poses a threat and violates the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal. Panamanian leaders, however, do not see a real threat to the treaty or the use of military force to take over the canal. The US has been critical of the Panama Canal's management and fees, with President Trump calling for changes and even suggesting the canal be returned to the US. Rubio's visit to Panama is part of a larger effort to strengthen partnerships in Latin America to address issues like migration and drug trafficking. [Extracted from the article]
