Abstract

Cet article propose d'examiner le vieillissement féminin chez deux figures phares du dix-neuvième siècle que sont la mondaine et la modiste. À travers une analyse approfondie de deux tableaux d'Edgar Degas, Madame Jeantaud au miroir (1875) et Les Modistes (1890), la présente étude entreprend de montrer comment les rouages de la modernité et les diktats de la mode de l'époque font du vieillissement féminin un phénomène à la fois social, physique et symbolique.
