Abstract

The article focuses on a rare silver pocket watch linked to Oliver Cromwell, recently acquired by the Cromwell Museum in Cambridgeshire. Made by London watchmaker William Clay, the watch was gifted by Cromwell to his cavalry officer John Blackwell during the 1650 Siege of Clonmel in Ireland. Blackwell, a Puritan and officer in Cromwell’s New Model Army, later became a political figure and governor of Pennsylvania. The watch, a fine example of 17th-century craftsmanship, is now on permanent display alongside other artefacts related to Cromwell’s life and era. [Extracted from the article]
