Abstract

The article is a collection of book reviews from the Missouri Historical Review. The first review discusses a biography of William Clarke Quantrill, a guerrilla leader during the Civil War. The reviewer praises the author's efforts to provide a cultural context for Quantrill's rise to leadership and challenges the one-dimensional portrayals of him in previous works. The second review discusses a book about the Reconstruction period and the Ku Klux Klan. The reviewer highlights the book's documentation of Klan violence and the efforts of Black Americans and their allies to protect their rights. The book also examines President Ulysses S. Grant's role in enforcing the law and supporting civil rights. The third review discusses a book about Kansas City's Montgall Avenue and its significance in the African American experience in the 20th century. The author presents biographies of Black leaders who lived on the avenue and explores themes of racial uplift and civil rights. [Extracted from the article]
