Abstract
The article examines the evolving portrayal of masculinity and physical prowess in action films, highlighting the crucial yet often unrecognized role of stuntmen like Yakima Canutt, who shaped iconic sequences in classics such as *El Cid* (1961) and *Ben-Hur* (1959). It discusses how stars like Charlton Heston and John Wayne relied on stunt professionals to convey believable heroism, a dynamic complicated by modern filmmaking techniques like green screens and CGI that distance actors from authentic physical action. The piece also reflects on shifting cultural attitudes toward male heroism, contrasting past cinematic ideals with contemporary challenges, including the rise of virtual effects and changing representations of love and bravery. Additionally, it draws parallels between the physical grace seen in sports, particularly soccer, and the traditional "right stuff" of action heroes, suggesting that real athleticism now offers a more genuine spectacle of courage and skill than many modern action films.
