Abstract
The article discusses an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery featuring Elizabethan miniatures by Nicholas Hilliard and Isaac Oliver. The miniatures, painted on vellum and mounted on playing cards, were popular among the ruling and middle classes as symbols of status and loyalty. Hilliard, a goldsmith from Devon, and Oliver, an immigrant from France, gained international recognition for their work. The exhibition showcases their portraits of prominent figures from the Elizabethan era, such as Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake. The article also highlights the techniques used by the artists, including Hilliard's precise detailing and Oliver's use of light and shade. The exhibition concludes with portraits of King James and Queen Anne, representing the transition to a new era. [Extracted from the article]
