Abstract

The article focuses on the detailed reconstruction of Donald McKay's final medium clipper ship, Glory of the Seas, using rare historic images and extensive research. It highlights the ship's design evolution toward balancing speed and cargo capacity, with a notably flat floor and sharp bow, contradicting earlier, less accurate depictions. The reconstruction effort involved analyzing photographs, paintings, and ship plans, revealing intricate details of the hull, figurehead, stern, deck structures, and rigging, supported by scale models built at 1:72 and 1:96 scales. Contributions from maritime historian Michael Mjelde and collaboration among modelers enabled a more authentic representation of the vessel's original appearance and modifications over time. The article also documents the challenges of overcoming perspective distortion in historic images and the importance of combining visual evidence with precise measurements for accurate ship modeling.
