Abstract
The article focuses on Syrian contemporary artist Sara Shamma's immersive installation, The Tower Tomb of Palmyra, which will represent Syria at the 2026 Venice Biennale. The installation pays tribute to the ancient funerary towers of Palmyra destroyed during the Syrian war and reflects on cultural loss and the potential for national reconstruction. Shamma’s work combines painting, architecture, light, sound, and scent to create a commemorative and forward-looking experience, emphasizing themes of death and rebirth amid Syria’s post-war transformation. The project, commissioned by Syria’s ministry of culture, marks a shift toward a single-artist national pavilion and highlights Shamma’s renewed connection to her country following her return in 2024.
