Abstract

Eric Nguyen beautifully weaves the disparate histories of Vietnam, Louisiana, Haiti, and France to tell a multidimensional, multicultural, and multigenerational story of a Vietnamese American refugee family. Ben's family, who were refugees from Vietnam, befriended Addy's family, who were immigrants from Haiti, in the city of New Orleans. This scene shows that Vietnam belongs as much to Dinh-Fredric, a Black American Vietnamese boy, as it does to H ng, a Vietnamese refugee woman. [Extracted from the article]
