Abstract

The article focuses on the relationship between justification by faith and sanctification in nineteenth-century American Anglican thought. It discusses how Bishop Charles McIlvaine defended the Reformation doctrine of justification against critiques from the Oxford Movement, arguing that emphasizing justification by faith does not exclude a strong commitment to sanctification. It examines McIlvaine's writings, including Justification by Faith (1839) and Oxford Divinity Compared (1841).
