Abstract

The article focuses on the operationalization of two new U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) task forces—Joint Task Force Gold (JTF-Gold) and Joint Interagency Task Force–Counter Cartel (JIATF-CC)—and their implications for North American defense alliances. The creation of JTF-Gold, a U.S.-only integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) unit headquartered alongside the bi-national North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) at Peterson Space Force Base, signals a shift toward unilateral U.S. defense operations that may marginalize Canada’s role and create security ambiguities. This development coincides with warming Canada-China relations and reflects broader changes in U.S. national security strategy, which now views traditional allies like Canada and Europe as less central. The article highlights concerns about Canada’s security posture given its significant investments in NORAD modernization and its historical opt-out from U.S. ballistic missile defense, suggesting that new defense arrangements are needed to address evolving geopolitical realities.
