Abstract
This study examines the regulation and definitions of crime and punishment within the Warsaw, Vilna, and Lodz Nazi ghettos, focusing on the roles and survival strategies of Jewish councils and their legal institutions. Drawing on primary sources in multiple languages, it challenges traditional views of Jewish councils’ passivity and the presumed high morality of ghetto inhabitants, highlighting the influence of German policies and local power dynamics on ghetto legal systems. The author identifies four categories of criminal behavior, emphasizing the complexity of Jewish agency and the varied responses of ghetto residents to imposed laws. While some factual inaccuracies and controversial conclusions are noted, the work contributes significantly to understanding the internal legal frameworks of ghettos and the lived experiences of their Jewish populations.
