Abstract

The article focuses on the Battle of Trafalgar, which took place on October 21, 1805, where the British Royal Navy, led by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, achieved a decisive victory against the Franco-Spanish fleet. Following the battle, the Royal Navy sold captured enemy ships and distributed the proceeds, known as 'prize money,' among the crew. Findmypast, in collaboration with the National Museum of the Royal Navy, has released a digital collection of prize books, which includes records of individuals involved in the battle. The article also highlights the case of Dennis Whelan, a young sailor killed in action, whose mother received compensation after his death. Additionally, it provides guidance for researching genealogy related to the Metropolitan Police. [Extracted from the article]
