Abstract
The article focuses on Private Samuel Vickery, a member of the Coldstream Guards, who earned a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his bravery during the Battle of Inkerman in the Crimean War. Despite the chaos and severe conditions of the battle, Vickery successfully defended against Russian forces, although he suffered frostbite that prevented him from returning to the front lines. After his recovery, he became the personal bodyguard of Florence Nightingale, assisting her in improving hospital conditions and ensuring her safety. Vickery's medal was recently auctioned for £6,000 by Noonans Mayfair, a prominent historical auction house in London. [Extracted from the article]
