Abstract

Medieval medicine is often misunderstood and seen as primitive, but it was actually quite innovative in many ways. While there was no anesthesia or concept of antiseptic, medieval physicians had a holistic understanding of maintaining physical health and many of their remedies are still used today. Elma Brenner guides readers through the often gruesome and bloody stories of medieval health workers and their beliefs. The article also mentions other topics covered in the issue, such as the ancient Mycenaeans, female artists in the Tate Gallery, and the influence of John Dillinger on the FBI.
