Abstract

The article focuses on the critical role of middle managers in helping organizations navigate economic uncertainty and rapid change. It argues that rather than cutting middle management to reduce costs, companies should reimagine these roles, provide targeted training, and empower managers to lead in areas such as workforce rebundling, talent acquisition, employee development, and data utilization. Evidence from a study of 1,700 global companies shows that firms with strong middle management perform better financially and sustain growth. The article also emphasizes the need for senior leaders to trust and support middle managers by reducing administrative burdens, recognizing their influence, and fostering a culture of purpose and compassion to enhance organizational health and employee engagement.
