Abstract

Song Byeok, a former North Korean propagandist, is now an artist who paints images that are ironic and satirical, often depicting Kim Jong-un in a silly manner. His artwork, showcased at the Oslo Freedom Forum, includes pop-art style pieces as well as simple and affecting images that depict the hardships faced by North Koreans, such as famine, brutality, and death. Song Byeok's personal story is one of tragedy, as he experienced the devastating effects of the North Korean regime, including the loss of his father and the harsh conditions of prison. He now lives in Germany and continues to use his art to shed light on the plight of his fellow countrymen. [Extracted from the article]
