Abstract

The article recalls the speech by former British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone on September 24, 1896 at Hengler's Circus, West Derby Road, Liverpool, England about the slaughter of thousands of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. Topics discussed include Gladstone's claim that the blame for the Armenian atrocities rested with the government in Constantinople and with Sultan Hamid II and the British press's varying opinions on Gladstone's Liverpool speech.
