Abstract

The article focuses on identifying the type of revolvers referenced in Arthur Conan Doyle’s story "The Problem of Thor Bridge." It analyzes historical context and firearm technology from the late 19th century to argue that the guns were likely a matched, cased pair of American Colt revolvers, either Navy or Army models, possibly converted from black powder percussion to cartridge-ready versions. The discussion considers the practicality of loading mechanisms for Maria Pinto Gibson, the victim, and the likelihood that such presentation-quality revolvers would have been owned by her wealthy husband, J. Neil Gibson, a senator and mining magnate. The author concludes that the Army Colt, being the latest and larger caliber model, is the most probable candidate, while acknowledging ongoing debate among Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts.
