Abstract
The article explores the influence of British painters J.M.W. Turner and art critic John Ruskin on the American landscape artist Frederic Church, particularly in his works "Twilight, A Sketch" and "Twilight in the Wilderness." Church's use of vivid colors and dramatic atmospheric effects in these paintings reflects Turner's mastery of landscape painting, which Church admired despite never visiting Britain. The article also discusses how Ruskin's writings, especially regarding themes of guilt and the evils of slavery, resonated with Church during a politically charged time in the United States, ultimately connecting his work to broader social issues. The synergy between Church's and Turner's works is highlighted through their shared themes, particularly in the context of American abolitionism and the impending Civil War.
