Abstract
The article focuses on the geopolitical and social dynamics of the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—particularly in the context of their eastern borders and the ongoing militarization due to perceived threats from Russia. It discusses historical events, such as the Singing Revolution and the Baltic Way, which led to the countries' independence from the Soviet Union, and highlights their accession to NATO and the EU as pivotal moments in securing their sovereignty. The Latvian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, titled "Landscape of Defence," explores the transformation of the border landscape and the impact of hybrid warfare, particularly in relation to migration crises orchestrated by Belarus. The article raises questions about the role of architecture in reimagining borderlands as spaces of coexistence rather than mere barriers. [Extracted from the article]
